Five AI, DevOps & Cloud role-based certification stacks for 2026

Most people collect certifications like badges. A cert on its own proves you passed a test. A stack of certs, where each one proves a different skill, is what actually moves a resume to the top of the pile.

This is the role-based version: five roles, the certification combo that works for each, and a 100% free way to prepare for every single one. No paid courses, no subscriptions required.

Free Resources That Cover Almost Everything

Bookmark these first. Most of the certs below are covered by one of these platforms, for free.

  • AWS Skill Builder — 600+ free digital courses, including official exam-readiness courses for every AWS cert.

  • Microsoft Learn — the entire official learning path for every Microsoft cert, free forever, with sandbox labs.

  • Google Skills (formerly Cloud Skills Boost) — official Google Cloud learning paths, plus 35 free lab credits a month if you join the free GEAR / Innovators program.

  • NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute — Free Self-Paced Courses — 20+ genuinely free hands-on AI courses (Generative AI Explained, Agentic AI Explained, RAG Agents with LLMs, NIM, NeMo Curator).

1. Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE)

The stack: Cloud Practitioner → Claude Certified Architect → CKA → NVIDIA AI Operations

A practitioner-level cloud cert is great for fundamentals, but it won't prove you can operate agentic production systems at scale. That's the gap this stack closes.

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (or any practitioner-level cloud cert)

Foundational cloud vocabulary. Cheap, fast, and it stops you from sounding lost in an architecture conversation.

Claude Certified Architect

This is the one that actually differentiates an FDE resume in 2026. It covers agentic architecture, MCP, tool calling, the Claude Agent SDK, and context management — the exact systems you'll be deploying at customer sites. It's a proctored, scenario-based exam, not a course-completion badge.

CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator)

Hands-on, performance-based, no multiple choice. This is what tells an employer you can actually operate a cluster.

NVIDIA AI Operations (NCA AI Infrastructure & Operations)

Shows you understand how modern AI workloads actually get deployed and run: GPU orchestration, cluster deployment, production workload performance.

2. DevOps and SRE

The stack: RHCSA → CKA → one cloud DevOps pro cert → NVIDIA AI Infrastructure

Terraform Associate is great for IaC, but it's not a hands-on exam. Start somewhere that forces you to actually do the work.

RHCSA (Red Hat Certified System Administrator, EX200)

All hands-on. Enterprises still run on Linux — AI era or not.

CKA

Same resources as the FDE section above. For DevOps this one is non-negotiable: containers in production are the job.

Pick your cloud: AWS DevOps Pro or Google Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer

NVIDIA AI Infrastructure (cloud-agnostic)

The one that says you don't just deploy applications, you understand the infrastructure running them — GPU clusters, scheduling, and production AI workloads.

3. AI Engineer

The stack: Gen AI fundamentals → a cloud AI cert → Claude Certified Developer/Architect or NVIDIA Gen AI + Agentic AI

A Coursera Gen AI course is great for the basics, but it's a course. It won't prove you can build anything.

Gen AI fundamentals (free)

Then a cloud AI cert on the cloud you already work in

Then agent architecture: Claude or NVIDIA

Claude Certified Developer / Architect — agent architecture, MCP, tool calling, the Claude API, and production concerns like retries, structured outputs, and prompt injection.

NVIDIA Generative AI LLM (NCA-GENL) — the LLM lifecycle: transformer architecture, prompting, RAG, LangChain/LangGraph orchestration, building and integrating LLM applications.

NVIDIA Agentic AI — the operational half: agent architecture, reasoning and planning, memory, multi-agent workflows, tool and knowledge integration, evaluation, deployment, scaling, and governance.

Which of the two? Gen AI LLM if you're building LLM applications. Agentic AI if you're operating agent systems in production. Take Gen AI LLM first — the Agentic exam assumes it.

4. Data Engineer

The stack: Data fundamentals → a cloud data cert → Databricks Certified Data Engineer

The Google Data Analytics Certificate is great for fundamentals, but analytics isn't engineering. One reads the data, the other builds the pipelines that deliver it.

Fundamentals (free)

Then a cloud data cert

Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate

Spark and lakehouse at scale. Cloud-agnostic, so it stacks on top of any of the three above.

5. Security

The stack: Security+ → one cloud security cert → CKS

The Google Cybersecurity Certificate is great for fundamentals, but it's a course, not an industry certification.

CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701)

This is the credential that gets you your first security role. Full stop.

Then go deep on one cloud

CKS (Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist)

Hands-on. Requires an active CKA first. Stacks on any cloud.

Fundamentals, cloud, and cloud-native security. Very few resumes have all three.

How to Get These Exams Cheap (or Free)

Exam fees are the real barrier, not the learning. Almost every vendor runs discount programs — most people just don't know where to look.

Linux Foundation (CKA, CKS, CKAD, KCNA, KCSA)

  • KSUG.AI — a Kubernetes/cloud-native community that maintains a 30% off sitewide code for Linux Foundation certifications. As of now the code is 30K8SUG. Works on CKA, CKAD, CKS, KCNA, KCSA and the Kubestronaut bundle. Codes change, so check the site before you buy.

  • Linux Foundation also runs heavy seasonal sales (Black Friday / Cyber Monday and mid-year), often stacking to 40–50% off. Never buy at full price.

  • Your CKA/CKS voucher includes two free attempts at the killer.sh exam simulator — harder than the real thing, and the single best predictor of whether you'll pass.

Microsoft (AZ-900, AI-102, DP-700, SC-200, AZ-500)

  • Microsoft Certification Voucher Offers (GitHub) — a community-maintained tracker of every live Microsoft voucher, beta exam, and discount offer, with eligibility rules and registration links. Check it before booking anything.

  • Microsoft Virtual Training Days — attend a free 1–2 day virtual event and get a 100% free exam voucher for fundamentals-level exams. Repeatable across different events.

  • Microsoft Learn Cloud Skills Challenges — complete a learning challenge during the event window for a free or 50%-off voucher. Watch for these around Build and Ignite.

  • Beta exams — new exams often launch with an 80–100% discount code for the first few hundred candidates.

AWS

  • Passing any AWS exam historically earns you a 50% discount voucher for your next one, in AWS Certification Account benefits — check your account after each pass.

  • AWS Skill Builder Exam Prep — free official exam-prep courses and one free official practice question set per exam. Don't pay for third-party dumps.

  • AWS runs periodic free-voucher promotions through AWS re/Start, AWS Educate, and partner/community events (AWS User Groups, AWS Community Days). Join your local AWS User Group.

Google Cloud

  • Google Cloud Innovators / GEAR program — free to join, gives you 35 lab credits a month on Google Skills, which covers most hands-on labs for free.

  • Google regularly issues free or 50%-off exam vouchers through Cloud Study Jams, Google Cloud Next, and Google Developer Groups. Find your local GDG.

Databricks

NVIDIA

  • Proctored NVIDIA certification exams are frequently offered at no cost to in-person GTC attendees (a €115–€425 value). Watch the GTC and NVIDIA Training pages.

Students and career changers

One rule: never book an exam at list price without checking for an active promotion first. Ten minutes of searching regularly saves $100–$400.
